Recumbent exercise cycles have become increasingly popular over the years and for good reason. These exercise machines provide users with the same type of cardiovascular workout as an upright bike, but there are some key benefits that can assist a lot of different types of users.
In essence, a recumbent bike will allow users to enjoy cardiovascular exercise by engaging the lower body in a variety of different cycling activities. Typically, the exercise programs will vary through the adjustment of tension and duration of those tension levels. While both recumbent and upright cycles can offer these types of workouts, there are certain benefits of using a recumbent cycle for your workouts. Here are three:
1. Better lower back and lumbar support. Because of how recumbent bikes are built, their seats offer better lower back and lumbar support. This ultimately leads to a better workout experience since there will be less pain in those key areas. As well, the seating position does not require that the cyclist lean excessively forward to grip handlebars during a workout, allowing the user to be more comfortable overall.
2. Easier to get on and off. Unlike an upright bike which can be tricky to mount, many recumbent bikes are equipped with step-through frame, allowing users to get on just as they would a chair in their own dining area. Even recumbent bikes that do not have step-through frames are easier to "mount" because they are lower to the ground and require a lot less lower body force to lift one's leg over the seat or frame (compared to a traditional upright bike).
3. Semi-reclined seating position. Unlike upright cycles that require an upright seating position which can lead to lower back pain, discomfort or pain in the buttocks area as well as other muscle strains, the seating position on recumbent bikes is semi-reclined. This not only allows for a more comfortable seating position, but it keeps the user more relaxed. This relaxed seating position is instrumental in keeping the user coming back for future workouts (nobody wants to return to a bike that leaves them feeling tense and in-pain).
These three benefits of recumbent exercise cycles are just the tip of the iceberg. Since both traditional and upright cycles can provide the same essential cardiovascular workout, emphasis should of course be placed on user comfort. This is more important for older users who are more apt to suffer from lower back pain or irritation and who are less flexible to climb over an upright bike due to age or injury. But just because recumbent bikes are technically more comfortable than upright bikes, choosing one style of bike over the other will always come down to the user's personal comfort level.
