Exercise Cds

Maybe your doctor told you to lose weight, or you want to look better for an upcoming wedding or other event. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke are four more reasons to get physical activity. We've all heard the facts - 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week will reduce the risk of becoming ill.
I am just as guilty as other people of procrastinating and lacking motivation to exercise. However, I eventually get back on track. Throughout the years I've found three things that work for me and I wanted to share them. I hope they will motivate you to start moving and stop lounging.
1. Do NOT do physical activity for 30 minutes in the beginning. Yes, I know, the studies show that 30 minutes of exercise is the magic number. But look at it realistically: if you have never exercised, are overweight, unmotivated and just plain hate exercise, making yourself do what you don't want to do will not work!
Here is what I do after not exercising for many moons - I tell myself that I can do anything for one minute, two minutes or 5 minutes. And then I plan when I am going to walk for a small amount of time each day.
Each week I add time so that after a few months I'm doing 30 minutes or more per day. After the first week or two, you begin to feel proud of yourself and look forward to exercising (I choose walking, but it could be any other activity, e.g., biking, swimming, etc.)
2. Use music to help you get started. This is a trick I learned years ago. If you have an Mp3 player, or a phone with that feature, a CD or cassette player, find 2 songs that make you happy and make you want to get out of your chair and dance.
Slap on your headphones and just go for a walk (or bike ride) with your player; when one song is done, turn around and walk home. Or find some stairs and do lightweight "stepping."
Add more music to your Mp3 with CDs from the library (copy to your PC and download to your player); or one of the many free Mp3 sites on the internet. You can also buy songs from a plethora of websites such as http://www.amazon.com.
The ways you can use music to help you move are endless. For example you can a) have a different genre of music each day of the week; b) create several playlists with your favorite artists; c) listen to entire albums and d) if you don't have a player of some kind, listen to your favorite music or talk radio shows with a cheap portable radio.
3. Get a dog, or if you have a dog, take him or her for a walk. If you can't have a dog, find someone in your neighborhood that would loan you their dog. Believe me, if someone would offer to walk my dog for a few minutes 5 days a week, I'd jump on it! Most dogs LOVE walks and with a commitment to take a dog out, you'll feel guilty if you decide to be lazy (yes, I know from personal experience!)
If you hate dogs, find a person to walk with you. Perhaps someone at your church wants to get moving also, or a co worker will walk with you at lunch. If you put some feelers out, you will be able to find a walking partner. It will be hard to stay on the couch if someone else if waiting for you and counting on your company.
The pain of DISCIPLINE to exercise weighs OUNCES compared to the pain of REGRET, which weighs TONS due to the damage we do to our bodies. Would you rather get heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other illnesses, or would you rather use a small amount of discipline to take charge of your health now?
Will you look back in a few years and have huge regrets, or will you choose today to start small, get some tunes, find a partner and slowly build a better YOU? As Sally Fields says, "you only have this one body and this one life." Make the most of it!
