The seated cable row, spinal mechanics
Seated Cable Row-Spinal Mechanics
Welcome to this edition of FITNESS INSIDER - I hope you are enjoying your summer. While there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy, it is hard to believe that we recently passed the mid-way point of the year already. I don't know if it because I am getting older or because I have a looming book deadline, but whatever the cause time sure seems to be flying by in exponential chunks.
Speaking of a book I am writing (that will be out later this year and can I say modestly that it will be like no other book in the industry), I just shot some photos for the book on shoulder stabilization. It got me thinking about the exercises we commonly do with our clients and whether or not they are hurting or helping our clients.
You see, many of our clients have poor scapular stabilization that directly leads to movement dysfunctions of the neck, thorax, and shoulder complex. While that may seem obvious, what is less obvious is how our cuing and positioning of our clients during common exercises actually contribute to their movement dysfunction.
Let's take the seated row for example and skip the functional vs. non-functional argument for another edition of FITNESS INSIDER. The seated row is an excellent pattern for:
*
improving scapular stabilization
*
grooving the 'long spine' posture
*
training the posterior shoulder complex, biceps, and core stabilizers
The challenge with the seated row often has to do with the client's ability to get into a neutral spine posture. Often the bench is too low for the client to sit in a neutral lumbar spine posture so they begin positioned in a flexed spine posture. This posture is only exacerbated when they put their feet up onto the footplates. They are then cued into excessive thoracic extension contributing further to the problem.
What could have been a great exercise for spinal posture is now a direct contributor to poor posture and potential low back problems. However, this problem is easily corrected with a few small adjustments.
Check out this video to see how to improve your client's posture in the seated row. http://fitnesseducationseminars.com/cable_row_spinal.htm
CONCLUSION
The seated row is an excellent pattern to train the stabilizers of the trunk, spine, and shoulder. Simple adjustments in the client's position can make a difference between the pattern helping or hurting your client. In the next edition we will look at the scapular mechanics related to the seated row.
