Most of us do regular physical exercises. Some of us jog, some swim, some play basketball, and some go to the gym. Some of us are pro athletes, some are middle-aged parents, and some are teenagers. Whoever we are and whatever exercise we do, all of us exercise regularly with the same purpose: to improve our body's performance. We would like to exercise more and more in order to improve fast. But there's one stumbling block: our body's exhaustion after exercise. On one side we want to exercise as often as possible to achieve maximum results, but on the other hand we have to keep up with exhaustion and fatigue from exercising and other activities. Working out in fatigue is useless because your body isn't ready yet to perform, thus it will only result in an even worse exhaustion or even injury. That's why recovery plays a vital role in your exercise. A balanced recovery and exercise plan will help us to optimize our body's performance and get maximum results from our training.
When we work out, the muscle tissues of the body parts we used will be broken through strain. This is what we might feel as muscle sore. In order to rebuild the broken tissues and increase its power, certain period of rest is needed. Depending on the load and intensity of exercise, tissue recovery may take between one to two days. When the tissues have finished its repair, we can continue working up again using the same muscle. We also need to replace the energy lost from our body due to workout. Of course, there are some ways to help us recover and replenish energy faster.
First, get enough rest. Resting gives the body time to take care of itself from fatigue or even injury. We should avoid exerting the same muscles in two straight days, or we may suffer an injury. Second, stretch the body after workouts. Stretching helps muscle tissues to "breathe", thus stopping lactic acid production which causes sore muscles and stiffness. Besides resting and stretching, we need to restore the energy and body fluid that are lost from exercise. Eating a balanced diet proves to be one of the most important factors in body exercise. A balanced diet should contain the main nutrients (carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamin, mineral) proportional to our body needs. Some people mistook fat as "junk substance" thus avoiding it at all cost. In fact fat is useful for containing fat-soluble vitamins or else they can't be absorbed by our body. Just don't take more fats than you need.
We should drink enough water to replenish body fluid and avoid dehydration. Drinking recovery drinks after exercise would help us recover faster as they contain minerals, vitamins, and ions that catalyze anabolic tissue repair reaction inside our body. Having a massage or a relaxing bath also helps our recovery. A massage makes us relaxed and helps keeping our blood circulation well, so does a good bath. Hot water shower causes blood vessels to expand, allowing more blood to circulate throughout our body. Cold water or ice bath after exercise is also a great way to reduce muscle soreness and recover fast from fatigue.
