When you walk around in your local gym, recreation center or even watching tv, you often see people doing what to you seem like strange maneuvers on huge plastic balls. And you think to yourself, "What the bleep are these people doing?" This article is to introduce you to Pilates and how these so called 'plastic' balls can be applied in Pilates exercises.

What is Pilates? The name actually comes from the creator, Joseph Pilates, originally from Germany who later on moved to the US. Pilates can be thought of as a series of exercise routines that focuses on learning and mastering the control of your core muscles. These core muscles are deep muscles within the abdominal and back muscles, which surround and support the spine. The purpose behind properly training in Pilates is to improve body posture, which would strongly contribute to better health. Joseph Pilates named this method Contrology.

Next, what are exercise balls? They are made from soft elastic PVC (Polyvinyl chloride). These balls tend to range in sizes from 14 to 34 inches (in diameter) - they are intentionally designed to be large. You will hear the exercise balls referred to by other many different names. The common ones include Swiss ball, pilates ball, stability ball, balance ball and yoga ball. Originally used in physical therapy, the exercise ball was later adopted for use as part of an athlete's training and in general fitness, such as in Pilates. You should take note that although the pilates ball is used in Pilates exercises, it was not created by Joseph Pilates. He did however develop other pieces of equipment that add resistance (and hence increase difficulty) in the various exercises, for example, the reformer.

From the above description of the Pilates system, you can probably already gather how an exercise ball can easily apply. Being spherical in shape, the ball is an unstable object. So even when you merely sit on the ball, you need to consciously (at least if you are completely new to using one) maintain balance in your body to remain upright on it. Depending on the length of time you are using it and the difficulty and correctness of your exercises, you would be engaging multiple muscles. Based on my personal experience as a beginner, I certain could feel the effects of sitting on a pilates ball and from doing basic exercise routines.

If you are thinking of buying a pilates ball to use at home, they generally come deflated in a box with a small pump. You can then inflate the ball and give it the appropriate amount of air pressure.
