Being in a real fight, no matter the varying degrees of seriousness, can be a harrowing experience.
Yet, when one tries to master a fighting technique, or learn the nuances of a real fight, the initial shock of an impending combat can be lessened, as the fighter is already trained to respond to attacks in a set sequence. It is not an overstatement that the right moves preserve life.
It is true that all martial art forms are unique and beautiful in their own right. Many respectable martial art teachers have said that comparing one art to another is like comparing an animal to another animal. They are simply different organisms to begin with. Both are quite unique compared to each other; both have weaknesses, and both enjoy their own strengths.
However, the effectiveness of a martial art in melee combat, or in a real fight, is somewhat a different matter. While it is true that the forms of the arts are not worth comparing, the efficiency and effectiveness at which a particular art can dismantle opponents can be observed and measured. Some of the most practical martial arts enable people to injure or debilitate enemies in the quickest amount of time, with a recovery rate for the injured lasting for many, many days.
A lot of fighters loyal to their art may not agree with the following list, but for common people wanting to defend themselves in the streets at a basic level, the following list can be pretty helpful.
Muay Thai. A very practical striking art, using the eight (or nine, if traditional) points of contact of the human body: fists, elbows, shins, and knees. Muay Thai is primarily a power-based fighting style, focused on bludgeoning an opponent to submission at the quickest possible time.
Brazilian Jiujitsu. A staple of the UFC, this grappling martial art is quite effective in very close melee combat.
Filipino Knife Fighting. Knives will always figure in mugging and crimes. Filipino knife fighting will teach you the scientific way of using a knife and avoiding knife parries and thrusts. Very essential since a bladed weapon is definitely one of the quickest ways to end a life.
Israeli Krav Maga. This is as practical as it can get. Krav Maga is used mostly by anti-terrorist personnel in public places where personal defense against all manner of weapons and guns is absolutely needed. Perfect for the most unexpected attacks.
In the end however, the winner of an actual, real fight, belongs to those with physical gifts, and most of all, extensive training.
