Elastic Brace Protect

Reflex Release Technique is a method of pain relief developed by physical therapist John Iams. Iams believes that many of the musculoskeletal pain problems are due to over-active reflexes. He has devised a method of evaluating and treating these reflexes that often give immediate pain relief.

After injuries occur, the muscles often tighten up reflexively to protect from further injury by limiting movement. In some cases these injuries may be due to sustained stress or repetitive movement. This would be similar to the philosophy of joint mobility movements and releasing this reflex activity.

Excess tension in the joints or muscles can create pain. Reflexes can help us avoid injury and are meant to protect us. Past traumas may make these reflexes more sensitive and possibly over-active. Iams refers to the startle and withdrawal reflexes as those his technique deals with.

Iams performs an exam on his patients in which he palpates areas along the spine with a gentle pressure. He is dealing with specific "trigger regions" that may indicate increased levels of discomfort or pain. He doesn't press down on the tissues like he is searching for a triggerpoint, but slides his fingers along these areas.

He is looking for a pain response like a gasp, groan, or a grimace. Depending on what he finds he will use the appropriate technique for that area. I've seen a videotape of Iams using this technique and it looks interesting. The treatments don't seem to use a lot of pressure and thus, don't create a lot of pain for the patient.

He claims to get a very rapid reduction in pain with most chronic cases. In working with joint mobility movements, I've become aware that reflexes may indeed be a big contributor in causing pain. While I haven't seen these techniques in person, this method looks pretty promising.

I still believe highly in movement therapy because we have too many sedentary people in our society who don't get enough movement, and lack of proper movement can greatly contribute to physical problems. My guess is that those people with scar tissue buildup will still need some type of specific treatment to make the scar more elastic.
