Dutch Jump Ropes

Did you know that by jump roping at a moderate speed of 70-120 turns per minute for just 15 minutes you will burn as much as 150-200 calories? That equals to running a 10 minute mile- which would you rather do?

Jump Roping is a total body workout! Roping targets the calves, hamstrings, quadriceps, butt, inner thigh, outer thigh, pecs, traps, lats, all the muscles of the back, the arms, and it even hits the core muscles as well. Some of the other wonderful benefits are an increase in coordination, stamina, endurance, bone density, and agility. The best part of all is that a jump rope costs anywhere from $3.00-$25.00 depending on what kind you are looking for.

Let me give you some tips on the best way to get fitted for a rope.

1. Place one foot on the center of the rope
2. Pull the rope straight up along the side of your body
3. If the handles reach all the way to your armpits, then it's the perfect length for you.

Always practice proper form when jumping. Keep your knees slightly bent to avoid injuries to your knees, and land softly on the balls of your feet. Allow your hands to stay at hip level, using your wrists and forearms to move the rope in circles. Make sure you warm up your muscles before jumping too. Many people think the simple act of roping will be the warm up, however, you have many muscles in play with this exercise, so you want to give them each a chance to be properly warned of the exercise to come. Some great warm up moves are Frankensteins, squats, lunges, swimmers, arm circles, ankle circles, wrist circles, neck rolls, etc.

If you're a beginner, start slowly, and don't get frustrated and give up! It takes time to adjust to a new activity, start off with skipping for 20 seconds and then resting out of the rope for 10-20 seconds. Repeat this sequence for 10-15 minutes. As you become more comfortable with the movements, increase your time up to a minute, alternating working and resting intervals throughout the workout.

Once you've mastered the skill, and then try adding variety to your workout such as combining:

• Double jumps
• High knees
• Side to side jumps
• Mini lunges
• Crossovers
• Jogging in place

Change up the movements. The key is to have fun with it. There are no excuses about exercise when it comes to jump roping, it is small enough to fit anywhere and travels very well. Pick out some jamming music and have a blast! I love my jump rope not just for the mounting benefits of it, but because it brings me back to my elementary school days of Double Dutch and challenging every kid on the school playground to out jump me. It makes me feel youthful again and it is something I can do with my daughters as well. So go out there and pick out a pretty jump rope and let's have some fun and burn that extra pudge while we're at it!!
