Growing raspberries is relatively easy, and very rewarding for they produce the most fruit for the amount of work involved. Pruning, weeding and mulching the canes is well worth being able to enjoy the wonderful flavour of these juicy berries freshly picked. They come in red, black, purple, and yellow. They also may produce in spring, fall, or be 'everbearing'. The plants are very hardy, and there are really just a few tips to growing raspberries successfully.
A good location for the raspberry patch is the first decision. Growing raspberries requires a neutral soil. A pH of 6.0 is best. If the soil is a bit acidic, agricultural or horticultural lime can be added. If you are not sure what your soil is like, your regional government agency will have information about how and where to get soil tests performed. The soil should also have a lot of humus in it. While there are many ways to add organic matter, the best supply is composted manure with a lot of straw in it. If this is not available, grass clippings, young weeds, wild grass, or old vegetable plants from the garden. Regardless of which growing medium you choose for your raspberries, it should be worked into the soil before planting.
In the cooler climates where raspberries thrive, spring planting is recommended. Work the soil as soon as the frost is gone, and leave it rough until planting the canes at about the same time you would plant beans. If you are planting packaged canes, presoak them in muddy water. This freshens the plants, and the mud particles stick to the fine roots, helping the plants to get a good start when set out. Fall planting is a good way to start growing raspberries in warmer climates with little or no frost. The new growth attained before dormancy, will continue in the spring, even before it is feasible to do any spring planting, giving your plants a head start.
Growing raspberries requires full sun and good air circulation around the plants to keep the berries from molding as they ripen. These are the factors that will determine the next decision, to plant in a row, or in hills. The hill system allows for more air circulation around each small group of plants. Hedge rows can tend to get too thick and too wide, causing berry mold and increasing the chances of plant diseases. Plants within the hedge row should be started about three feet apart, with the rows no closer than five feet. Hills should be spaced four to five feet apart each direction. Once the plants have attained full growth, they should be tied to a stake with heavy twine. A system that combines both methods, is to bend the tops of several plants together, making an arch out of two clumps at a time.
Whether growing raspberries in a row or hills, they like to be cultivated around, taking care not to get too close to the plants as that will damage the new shoots emerging. Mulch will help control weeds within the hill or row. They also need to be pruned because while the roots or crowns are perennial, the canes are biannual and so need to be removed after they bear their fruit. Fall is the best time to prune as the difference between the new and old canes is very evident. Old canes should be taken off close to the ground. If it is necessary to do this in the spring, it should be done as early as possible to minimize the damage done to the new canes, and the leaves emerging on all canes. In the spring, the old canes are dry and brittle, often snapping off when sharply bent over.
The best part of growing raspberries is picking and eating them fresh. Because they are mostly water, the more water they get, the plumper and juicier they will be. Also because of this water content, they need to be picked carefully, and in small containers so their own weight does not squash them. They should be picked every other day, taking only the ripe ones at each picking. Pick them when it is cooler outside, and if they need to be washed, either cool them in the refrigerator first, or use cool water, wash them quickly and dry them on paper towels in sparse single layers. If you like to eat them, growing your own raspberries is definitely worth while.
