Century Martial

Muay Thai or Thai boxing as it's also called, is a Thai martial art form which has a long tradition, while its origin it thought to date back to the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th century. King Suriyenthrathibodi (reigned 1703-1709), also known as the Tiger King supposedly loved Thai boxing so much that he disguised himself as an ordinary boxer and fought against local champions in Thai villages. The Tiger King is also believed to order training to his soldiers who used this martial art form when they lost their weapons on the battlefield.

Both Thailand (at the time known as Siam) and the sport reached their golden age during the reign of Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V (reigned 1868-1910). During his reign it became the favorite sports of both rich and poor, and young and old. Training camps arose all over the country and virtually every village organized its own championships. Betting on the outcome become an important part of Muay Thai and the betting tradition still accompanies this martial art form despite the fact that most forms of betting in Thailand are forbidden. Thai boxing went through some changes in the first half of the 20th century though the sport itself has not changed dramatically. In the 1920's, the boxers began to wear gloves instead of rope wrappings and groin guards. At the same time were also introduced referee and timed rounds. However, most of the Muay Thai tradition remained unchanged including pre-fight rituals.

Today it is practiced all over the world. Rules of fighting vary from country to country but there are some general rules which are followed by all boxers. The fighting technique is referred to as the "Science of Eight Limbs" or the "Art of Eight Limbs" because it bases on use of eight points of contact including punching, kicking, elbow and knee strikes unlike two points in classic boxing (fists) and four points in other forms of kickboxing (fists and feet).

The techniques are divided into major techniques or mae mai and minor technique or luk mai but almost all base on use of the entire body. All Muay Thai training techniques use punching or chok (straight/cross, hook, uppercut and jab but may also include some western boxing punches), elbow or ti sok (horizontal, diagonal-downward, diagonal-upwards, downward, upward, flying and backward-spinning), kicking or te (straight kick, roundhouse kick, diagonal kick, jump kick, etc.), knee or ti khao (straight knee strike, jumping knee strike, flying knee strike, etc.) and foot-thrust or thip (a defensive technique used to block an attack). Thai clinch technique or chap kho is used exclusively in Thai boxing.

In addition to learning fighting techniques, training also focuses on body conditioning including running, weight training, stretching, rope jumping, shadowboxing, calisthenics and many other types of conditioning which help the boxer achieve fitness and toughness required for fighting, while Thai pad training is the most important technique in Muay Thai conditioning, the pad training is used for practicing all the fighting techniques including punching, kicking, and practicing knee and elbow strikes.
