In 1973 "Enter the Dragon" debuted and made Bruce Lee and the martial arts an overnight sensation. A few years later, movies featuring ninjas burst onto the scene. They took hold of our imaginations and haven't let go. What is it about these secretive black clad warriors that inspires such interest?
The unbelievable feats that they are capable of is one answer. But how much of what they do is attributable to ninja training and how much is Hollywood artistic license? And more importantly to us, is there any way we can acquire the skills of these martial arts supermen?
It helps to remember that, in reality, the ninjas of old were simply men that learned and practiced an impressive set of skills. Ninjutsu is not a martial art like we think of other arts. Ninja training encompasses much more than simply kicking, punching and gymnastics.
Ninja training was comprised of 18 disciplines: most dealt with specific weapons in the ninja's arsenal. The others included skills that todays military and Special Forces practice as well; camouflage and concealment, intelligence gathering, unarmed combat, etc.
Most people never think of these other disciplines as being part of a martial art. Subsequently, most people don't bother to learn them. Some of the disciplines you can teach yourself; like learning to disguise yourself.
Other disciplines (like unarmed combat) require a partner to practice with. Practicing ninjutsu's techniques with a partner is important. Leverage applied correctly can almost magically allow a smaller person to disarm and dominate a larger opponent. But it takes a lot of practice before these skills become effective in real life.
As much as we want to believe in the ninja legends and emulate the ninja movies we see; we have to realize that the myth of the magical ninja sorcerer is just that... a myth. You as a martial artist have to be willing to put in the time, tears and sweat to master these skills.
We are fortunate to live in a time where it is relatively easy to find teachers in these combat arts who are willing to train us. (Information related to ninja training was once closely guarded. Now, it is available to everyone. There are numerous dojos worldwide that teach ninjutsu. Also, ninja training dvds and books are readily available online).
The important thing to remember is that there are no superior martial arts but there are superior martial artists.
One of the best things you can do to improve as a martial artist (no matter what your style) is to get yourself in the best physical shape possible. The better shape you are in the longer you can train; the more advanced moves you can master; and you will be more likely to avoid injury.
Then, perhaps someday, people will whisper about your ninja training and superhuman-like skills.
John Roche is NOT a ninja assassin or a black-belt Grand Master of a super secret deadly martial art. He is a student of martial history, a lifelong devotee of the martial arts and an action/adventure movie afficianado. When he grows up he hopes to become either Batman or Jason Bourne.

Chinese Martial Arts (Hardcover) $53.61 "In the global world of the twenty-first century, martial arts are practiced for self-defense and sporting purposes only. However, for thousands of years, they were a central feature of military practice in China and essential for the smooth functioning of society. Individuals who were adept in using weapons were highly regarded, not simply as warriors but also as tacticians and performers. This book, which opens with an intriguing account of the very first female martial artist, charts the history of combat and fighting techniques in China from the Bronze Age to the present. This broad panorama affords fascinating glimpses into the transformation of martial skills, techniques, and weaponry against the background of Chinese history, the rise and fall of empires, their governments, and their armies. Quotations from literature and poetry, and the stories of individual warriors, infuse the narrative, offering personal reflections on prowess in the battlefield and techniques of engagement. This is an engaging and readable introduction to the authentic history of Chinese martial arts"-- |

Asian Martial Arts (Origins) $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Theories of the origins of Asian martial arts range from the highly diffusionist to models which show greater recognition of independent invention. There is a theory which claims Indian martial arts spread to China via the transmission of Buddhism in the early centuries of the common era. Proponents of this theory cite a popular legend about a prince turnedBuddhist monk named Bodhidharma (circa 5th century) who is said to have imparted his martial arts knowledge to the monks of the Shaolin Monastery, thereby founding Shaolin Kungfu. But historical records from the Southern and Northern Dynasties do not allude to Bodhidharma visiting Shaolin. In fact, the first mention did not appear in print until the publication of the Transmission of the Lamp in 1004, almost five hundred years after Bodhidharmas lifetime. Martial $30 In this age of the sound bite, what sort of author could be more relevant than a master of the epigram? Martial, the most influential epigrammatist of classical antiquity, was just such a virtuoso of the form, but despite his pertinence to today’s culture, his work has been largely neglected in contemporary scholarship. Arguing that Martial is a major author who deserves more sustained attention, William Fitzgerald provides an insightful tour of his works, shedding new and much-needed light on the Roman poet’s world—and how it might speak to our own. Writing in the late first century CE—when the epigram was firmly embedded in the social life of the Roman elite—Martial published his poems in a series of books that were widely read and enjoyed. Exploring what it means to read such a collection of epigrams, Fitzgerald examines the paradoxical relationship between the self-enclosed epigram and the book of poems that is more than the sum of its parts. And he goes on to show how Martial, by imagining these books being displayed in shops and shipped across the empire to admiring readers, prophetically behaved like a modern author. Chock-full of epigrams itself—in both Latin and English versions—Fitzgerald’s study will delight classicists, literary scholars, and anyone who appreciates an ingenious witticism. |
