Calf Support Brace

There are six major benefits to downhill training and why you may want to integrate it into your workouts:

1. Downhill running is a good way to work fast twitch muscle fibers without having to be able to run really fast.

2. Downhill training is a good way to develop and improve technique and running form.

3. Running on a decline is a good way to test footwear for different conditions you might find on race day.

4. Downhill racing is a very different mental game than uphill racing and it is good to build some psychological preparation.

5. The best place to make a move during a race is coming off the crest of a hill.

6. Once you get over the fear, it can be a lot of fun to just let loose with "little kids syndrome" when running down a hill.

Personally, I have traditionally disliked running down hill and was not very good at it until a few years past college. Even now, I much prefer running up than running down. It is much easier to hurt yourself on a decline than on an incline, and there is a sensation of not being in control that took me a long time to learn how to deal with.

The best way to learn to run on a decline is to just do it. Try to find a trail or grassy field that you can practice at. In Portland Maine, there's a short trail in Baxter Woods that is perfect for this. You start at the top and have about 500 meters of varying degrees of decline, a short flat stretch at the bottom, and then you finish your half mile repeats with a couple hundred meters on an incline. It is a great workout because you get to work on your downhill technique while also learning to convert that momentum through a couple of turns into a nice strong uphill finish.

Finding a trail is more forgiving on your legs as you learn how to run on the decline than asphalt would be. You are much less likely to hurt yourself if your form isn't perfect, and it can be a little easier to learn how to just let loose and let gravity do the work for you when you aren't as worried about the road rash you'd get if you fall forward.

Just lean forward, keep your feet beneath your center of gravity, and accept the fact that you'll feel like you are out of control as you fly down the hill. Soon enough, that will begin to feel normal, and you'll discover that good downhill running form is not only faster and easier than running slowly, but that it translates just as well to running on the level or uphill.
