If you are looking to improve your fitness level or lose weight but quickly grow tired of a treadmill or elliptical machine, consider doing a martial art like Taekwondo, kickboxing, karate. It is no surprise to martial artists that every gym, personal trainer, and fitness program has incorporated the training techniques and exercises the martial arts has been doing since it began. Everyone from Tae-Bo, Cardio Kicks, and even personal trainers have started using punching bags, focus mitts and kicking pads within their programs. So, instead of paying for a gym membership to go and do martial arts why not get one step closer and just do the martial arts and all this for usually less than most gyms you can join.
Whether you are looking to losing weight or to just be more fit don't pay for another gym membership. These estimates are probably on the conservative side bu I would rather be that way than exaggerate. First, 37% of gym members don't go to the gym While it is close to 80% regularly attend their martial arts class. Secondly to get all the workout gear will cost around $75 (shoes: $35, Shorts $20, Shirts $20) and a very nice Taekwondo uniforms will run around $50. You not only have a higher chance of going to class but to get started the gear will cost you much less.
Personal trainers are a terrific motivator and can push you in tough times and makes sure you workout when you don't feel like it. But, most of us cannot afford having an personal trainer like the stars, so the next best thing is having an instructor who pushes you and misses you when you don't attend class. Just like having a personal trainer or training partner waiting for you at the gym classes will give you the same motivation knowing you will be missed if you don't attend a class.
A couple of other benefits we will talk about are ones for the family. There are many families that all train the martial arts together and each member contributes their own abilities and skills to make the rest of the family better. For example, while the mother might be a black belt and the daughter is a blue belt the blue belt will have a firm grip on the blue belt kata. This kata might have slipped the memory of the mother a little so the daughter is able to brush mom up on her form and guide her through it.
Another benefit is that member of the family can exchange sparring gear and other martial arts supplies. If you have kids who are growing out of their uniform and you have another one coming up make sure to keep it as you can let the next child coming up use the same one. Also, if you choose to do sparring and competition martial arts you can travel all over the US as a family. you will be spending the whole weekend together and very important is that you will be there supporting each other.
In conclusion, many student come into the martial arts searching for one thing only to find another hits them smack in the nose. They find themselves focusing on how to constantly improve themselves every day and forget all the sweat and hard workouts they are going through. This will ultimately get them in the best shape of their life, and all this for less than you would have paid at the gym.
