Medical practitioners and researchers do not always know precisely what causes people to develop kidney stones. In some it could be poor diet and lack of exercise, while others may through heredity be predisposed to suffer from this condition.

As will most illness, prevention of soreness after kidney stones is far better than cure. And once you have suffered from this condition, prevention becomes tantamount. The doctor will want to know the patients medical history and may test both blood and urine to try to determine what caused the stones in the first place.

Soreness from kidney stones is relative to the size of the stone. They are generally quite small, but can range in size from as small as grains of sand to the size of a golf ball.

Most typically they may pass through the body unnoticed, but when they reach as little as 2 - 3 mm in diameter they are able to block the ureter. The spasm of the muscle attempting to push the stone down this narrow tube and into the bladder is what causes the soreness. A renal attack can be so severe as to cause damage in the lining of the urinary tract.

In 80% of the cases of this condition, the stones are small crystals of calcium oxalate. For a very long time calcium was believed to promote the development of these. However this is not the case today and low calcium diets are believed to be the cause of a higher risk of developing these.

In very rare cases it has been found that both ureters are blocked by the passage of kidney stones, and this instance the soreness after kidney stones is intense to say the least. "Loin to groin" pain may be experienced, together with blood in the urine. There may be difficulty passing urine or a frequent need to go, compounded by very little urine output. Soreness after kidney stones has been described as "the worst pain ever". It should be avoided and preventative methods are the only way of ensuring that you never have to experience this pain more than once.
