One of the leading causes of heart disease today is obesity, but most of us end up needing to rely on our doctors to let us know what our body mass index is. In this article, I will show you how to identify your body mass index, as well as how to perform formulas to find out what would be your normal weight for your height.

Unfortunately, the calculations of BMI is a little complicated. This is because, as we are three-dimensional beings, our height and our ideal weight do not scale according to a single ratio. Rather, as our height increases, our ideal weight actually squares. So, for instance, someone 1.5 times the height of someone else would have an idea 2.5 times the other's ideal weight.

Body Mass Index was developed in the metric system, so I will give that calculation first, as it is a much simpler formula. The formula is as follows

BMI = Height (in metres) / Weight (in kilogrammes) squared

You just need to divide your height by the square of your weight. Easy enough. For those using the Imperial or American system, another number needs to be added in order to correct for the different system:

BMI = (Height (in inches) * 703 ) / Weight (in pounds) squared

So, for this system, you multiply your height by 703, and then divide it by the square of your weight. Five feet is 60 inches and Six feet is 72 inches, if that helps with the initial calculation.

Finally, I will show you how to calculate what weight you need to reach in order to reach normal weight. The BMI index, according to the U.S. National Institute of Health, has the following categories. If you have a BMI less than 18.5, you are underweight. If you have one between 18.5 to 24.9, you have normal weight. If you have 25 to 29.9, you are overweight, and if your BMI is 30 or more, you are obese.

The formula here is more complex, but you can find out what your target weight should be when dieting. Here's what it looks like:

Goal weight in pounds = the square root of ( (Height (in inches) * 703) / 24.9)

So, whatever you want your BMI to be, just swap in that number for 24.9 above. That will tell you what weight you should be trying to reach to get to normal weight.

While you should still speak to your physicians about your weight, these formulas will enable you to calculate your current BMI on a day-to-day basis.

Active Health With Carol Vorderman (DS) $4.99 Active Health With Carol Vorderman is ostensibly similar to the other health titles: you tell Carol your vital statistics and she tells you you are overweight, because if you weren't why would you be buying such a title, right?! Then Carol calculates your Body Mass Index (BMI) and tells you how to become slimmer and fitter. The answer is to eat less and exercise more, of course... and Carol will devise a fitness regime for you and give you a target calorie count to aim for. But like Nintendo's other recent DS fitness title, Walk With Me, Active Health enables users to utilise the Activity Meter - basically a pedometer - to keep track of what exercise they have done. But Active Health goes beyond most other fitness titles, and takes a more holistic approach to your health. Not only does it advise you on an exercise regime, but it keeps track of what you have done in addition. Not only doe sit give you a calorie target, but it provides other useful nutritional advice, and even has a selection of recipes for you to try, some of them being Carol's own, we are told. Active Health also enables you to keep track of your salt, sugar and fat intake. The title does rely pretty heavily on the BMI - which is not always a good guide of whether a person is overweight or not, especially for athletic people. Top rugby players often show as "obese" when BMI is used as the yardstick, but it's a reasonable enough measure for your average person. The game is published by Nintendo, so you can be confident that despite Carol's attachment, it's not hastily rushed out tat to the exploit the success of Wii Fit. But there has been some confusion surrounding the game's relationship to Wii Fit.
