These days, the fad of breeding black koi fishes has become popular. Growing Koi fishes is believed to give luck to the owner as koi symbolizes "longevity". Many Chinese business establishments have aquariums or small ponds that house a variety of Koi fishes. Among the many breeds of Koi fish, the favorite is the Black Koi. This species is quite expensive when bought and are fewer compared to other colorful koi.

The reason why Koi fishes symbolize longevity is because of their life span. It has been reported that Koi fishes generally live up to 35 years. The reported oldest Koi Fish has amazingly lived up to 200 years. No wonder they are being displayed in stores because of the belief that they're lucky.

A person familiar with different breeds of fish will notice that Koi look like carps. Their bodies have color spots of orange and black- a general characteristic of carp fishes. The reason behind is Koi fishes are bred from Carps that's why they look alike. That is why many Koi enthusiasts love to go for the black.

Most Koi fishes are colorful to look at because of the spots on their body. Black breed of Koi are plainly black and don't have colorful spots in their body. They have different varieties with different names. Some of the varieties have amazing features that distinguishes it from other blacks.

The oldest known black variety of the Koi is the Karasu. Although it's pure black, it is easily distinguished from other varieties because of its belly. It does not have a black belly but rather orange or whitish. Other than that, its head, fins, body and tail are all pure black.

Another black breed of koi that has an interesting feature is the Matsukawabake Koi. This Variety is capable of turning itself into a white koi. It is possible when there are environmental changes such as temperature or change of season. The diet given to it can also allow it to change its color.

The most popular among all variety of the black species of Koi is the Kumonryu. Its body is said to resemble the body of a dragon. That is where it got its name "dragon". Dragons are known to bring luck according to old Chinese belief. This makes the Kumonryu the commonly chosen variety among the black breed.

Black Koi or whatever color is not cheap and to breed them is a tedious task. The owner will have to ensure that they live in a favorable environment. Otherwise, they get sick and die early making one lose his expensive investment quickly.
