Bands Heavy Kit

Started by the unique Black Sabbath while they tangled Heavy Blues sounds into a Heavy style of Metal all of their own, Doom Metal has become a whole genre in it's own right, now loved by a growing cult-following of Metal Heads.

As well known bands such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica were shredding away at the faster Thrash Metal of the early 80's, less well-known groups were slowing down the tempo and pioneering the Doom genre. Often using gloomy and dark vocals, Doom is usually played at a slower pace than classic Heavy Metal or Hard Rock, and is always of a scarier and groovier sound than some of the more well-known styles of Heavy Metal.

While being created in the 80s Doom maintained a powerful cult following, but commercially was lost in the mix to Metal bands that took the Sabbath sound and made the Hair and Thrash Metal subgenres. Groups such as Pentagram, Witchfinder and Saint Vitus were primarily credited with developing the now popular "Doom" name, and sound. Later, bands like Candlemass, Sleep, and Electric Wizard would take over wielding the Doom Lord flag.

The band members in a Doom band are the same as a normal Heavy Metal group, consisting of Guitar (or often two), Bass Guitar and Drum Kit. The sound typically uses large amounts of sustain, distortion and down-tuned Guitars (Guitars having their strings set to much lower notes than usual). In some cases some guitar players will only use the lower 2 guitar strings and play buzzing notes so low that it virtually sounds like a different instrument altogether.

Since the Doom Metal style was born there are many offshoots, some of which are the following: Stoner Doom - which mixes in psychedelic elements, Funeral Doom - using ambient mixes, Drone Doom - huge amounts of sustain and long droning sounds, and Death Doom - faster drums and heavy vocals.

Doom Metal gigs are very unique and are often mesmerizing, setting the crowds groove to the same level, which has everyone moving in sync to the heavy guitars. Concerts often include relaxed stage effects, e.g. dim lights and massive amounts of fog, to create an atmosphere of gloom and doom. As any fan of Doom Music will declare, once you refine your listening and start learning of the infectious grooves of Doom, you'll be sucked in forever!
