The idea for the Ball chair came from the creative mind and talent Aarnio Eero. The Ball chair is also called the Globe chair due to its spherical look. Aarnio first “saw” the idea for this chair when he and his wife moved to their first home during 1962.

At this point in time Aarnio was beginning to work freelance. Whilst the Eero home was spacious Aarnio felt the house needed a large comfortable armchair. To provide this item he decided to design and make a new type of armchair which would fill this gap. Many ideas later Aarnio had developed his chair into the shape of a ball. Since the chair design was basically the prototype, it was developed with the aid of Aarnio’s wife.

Once the design phase of the ball chair was finished the prototype chair was made using a plywood body mold. The inside of the mold was covered in fiberglass which was rubbed down to a smooth finish. Once the chair was ready it had the single leg attached and a custom made fabric covered interior made for it.

The Asko Company was the first company to deal with the production of this Ball chair to the public. Once released out into the world this chair saw phenomenal sales as people wanted to own one of these chairs. Today these chairs are still a hit with people. You can now find many different versions of the ball chair.
