The Basics Of Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial art, well known all around the world for it's lightning fast, often high, spectacular spin kicks. Tae Kwon Do has been around for many years, originally founded in Korea. It translates to "the are of punching and kicking", or the "art of unarmed combat".
The martial art Tae Kwon Do has four disciplines - patters, self defense, break test, and sparring. It isn't just one of these disciplines that make up the art, but a combination of them. All 4 of them are important, especially for those looking to advance in belt ranking. To advance in a belt, there are certain tests that students need to pass.
One of the great things about Tae Kwon Do is the fact that there are no age limits, and it can easily be learned by young children. Children of all ages will quickly learn fast reactions playing games, learn respect, and they will also learn their abilities as well as their disabilities.
The competitions however, are a bit different for children than they are for the adults. Even though the participants will wear full body protection, children can only kick and punch to the body, as no shots to the head are allowed. The competitions in Tae Kwon Do is what makes the art so very dominating. A majority of students that practice this martial art do so because of the competitions.
The competitions can be very exciting to watch, as they can get very competitive. Contrary to what many may think, the competitions aren't deadly, nor are they anywhere close to being as dangerous as Muay Thai fights. Competitors will wear full protection, including head gear. For adults, kicks to the head are allowed, although a majority of stylists can block them before they make impact.
In order to participate in the competitions, stylists will need to have a certain level of experience. It can take years to become good enough, especially for those who win. Competitions are a great way to learn, especially if there are participating fighters from other areas of the world. The skill of a stylist is a very important factor with the competitions and tournaments. If you have a black belt fighter going against a white belt - the results will normally be quite obvious.
All things aside, the art of Tae Kwon Do is a great martial art. Stylists can learn kicking, punching, blocking, and the spectacular movements the art is known for. Tae Kwon Do is practiced all around the world, meaning that there are just as many places to learn this art as there are Karate. For an art that won't disappoint - Tae Kwon Do teaches self defense and a whole lot more.

Karate Training $24.95 This book could actually be considered two books in one: a thorough history of Japanese karate-do and a profusely illustrated instruction manual for students of the martial art who have advanced beyond the beginning stages. Concerned about the misinterpretation of Japanese culture in general and karate in particular by many Western practitioners of karate, the author sets out in Part One of his book to trace the history of karate from its probable origins in India (or perhaps Greece) and its transmission in successively more developed forms to China, Okinawa, and then Japan. Relevant aspects of the history of Japan and influences-the samurai ethos, bushido, and Zen Buddhism-on its martial arts are then pointed out. Finally, the author discusses the changes made on the karate brought in from Okinawa due to these influences. Even with all this martial background, however, it is stressed that current karate-do is different in form and philosophy from the early traditions in that modern practice emphasizes karate as a sport, a means of self-defense, or even a way of life, but not as a means of dispatching an opponent. In Part Two the author first demonstrates important points of etiquette to be used in the karate dojo. He follows with well-illustrated instructions of kumite (sparring drills), including those involving two practitioners and those such as the doubleline drill and the circle drill which give practice in facing a number of opponents. Descriptions of many of these are not readily found in other English-language publications. The final chapter presents nine kata, introductory the advanced kata, Sochin and Nijushiho, are rarely seen in print in English. Often de-emphasized in the modern Western practice of karate, the important place of kata in the martial arts as well as their application to self-defense is here stressed. Further features include a history of karate in the United States, an Appendix listing rank requirements in Shotokan karate, and a recommended reading list. All in all, this book will prove to be an excellent source for martial arts historians and practitioners alike. |

Yoshukai Karate $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Mamoru Yamamoto (later called Katsuo) (b. 10 July 1938) began his formal training in the martial arts in Miyakonojo, Japan. He first studied judo, but began training in the Chitoryu style of karate under Dr. Chitose at the age of fifteen In 1959, Yamamoto and his wife Sumiko opened their first dojo in Kitakyushu, Japan in the Fujitani Judo Club. In the early 1960s, Chitose gave Yamamoto permission to start his own branch of ChitoRyu karate under the name of Yoshukan, and in 1963 Chitose changed the third kanji of their branchs name from kan meaning to stand alone to kai meaning association, indicating a potential for growth within the organization. During this early period, Yamamoto worked with Mas Oyama of Kyokushinkai Karate to develop the rules for Japanese full contact sparring to replace the sun dome tournament rule of the time. This rule meant that competitors must spar at full speed but could not make contact with one another, which made judging of fighting very subjective. Karate, the Hand of Death - Fullscreen $8.99 In this early martial arts action-drama, Matt Carver (Joel Holt) is an American who studied in Japan and is returning for his first visit in quite some time. Not long after he arrives, Matt comes into the possession of an unusual coin, which soon makes him the target of British ne'er-do-well Ivan Mayberry (Frank Blaine) and a band of Japanese toughs. After becoming reacquainted with his old friend Akira (Akira Shiga), who now runs a karate school in Tokyo, Matt learns just why the coin is so valuable -- it features code that, if correctly unraveled, will lead its bearer to a fortune in platinum. As Matt tries to sort out the good guys from the bad guys, he's forced to put his skills in karate to use. One of the first feature films centered on the martial arts (and certainly the first in English), Karate, the Hand of Death was made with the cooperation of the Japanese Karate Foundation. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
