We can probably all agree that taking part in a fitness program is a good thing, even if we don't actually do it. We know that doing this consistently and on a regular basis will go a long way towards improving the length and the quality of life.
So just how do you go about becoming fit? Exercise and proper nutrition are two of the keys to success. The other is your mindset. Yup, you heard right. Fitness begins in the mind.
If you don't believe that, think about some of the reasons you may have used to avoid working out at some time in the past.
How about the I don't have enough time reason? That's an easy one to use. We all lead busy lives and sometimes it's hard to squeeze in that workout.
But you can turn this around by asking yourself if there is anything in your day that is less important than your health. And of course there are lots of things when you look at it like that. See how a different mindset can lead to a different outcome?
Maybe you're worried that you'll look silly using the equipment at the gym or doing that aerobics class. If you're not happy with your appearance this can certainly be reason enough to persuade yourself to cancel a workout. After all, all those people at the gym will look great, won't they? And you'll probably sweat a lot more than anyone else because you're so out of shape.
With those thoughts running through your mind you'll never get to the gym. Instead think about how great you'll feel and how much better you'll look in a couple of months.
Are you concerned that you are so out of shape you may hurt yourself? That's your mind creating unnecessary worries. Make an appointment to see your doctor and get the go ahead before you start. Getting a clean bill of health first will go a long way towards giving you the confidence that you are healthy enough to exercise. Then start slowly and gradually increase time and intensity, as you feel ready.
If money is tight your mind may use this against you. If you think you can't afford the gym membership, or the home workout equipment or the fitness classes, you may find yourself using this as an excuse not to get started.
But you don't have to spend money on these things. You can get in a great workout at home. If you have to, why not go to the library and borrow a workout DVD. Or lace up those running shoes and go for a walk or a run.
Okay so now that you know your mindset is such an important key to your fitness success, make a commitment to fitness your new mindset. Remember, fitness begins in the mind.
Fitness is one of the keys to a long and healthy life. And it doesn't have to take hours or be boring. In fact, the best way to get fit is to take part in a sport or physical activity that you enjoy. That way it's more likely you'll stick with it. Even a few minutes a day is better than no minutes a day. Whether you're a beginner or a serious athlete, a great way to help you get the most out of your workouts is to use a heart rate monitor. The Arthritis Handbook $14.95 This comprehensive, but also highly practical and useful book deals with the basics what arthritis is, how it develops, and how readers can manage it. This is the first guide to osteoarthritis that focuses on how a combination of diet, exercise, and supplementation can be used to prevent and treat the disease. It will provide readers with the knowledge they need to take the appropriate steps to return to a healthy, pain-free, active life. The Arthritis Book begins by dispelling the common myth that arthritis pain is an inevitable part of getting older. The truth is that arthritis pain is no more inevitable than cancer or heart disease. By taking the appropriate steps, readers can reduce their chances of ever developing arthritis, and reduce the associated pain and disability if they already have it. There are numerous ways to prevent and treat arthritis. Getting back to a pain-free life requires a combination of common sense advice, an appropriate diet, targeted exercise, and a few carefully selected supplements. The Arthritis Book takes the reader on a detailed tour of how to combat arthritis by these simple means, and in many cases to avoid the use of medications, injection therapy, and surgery. When these more aggressive therapies are necessary, emphasis is placed on using them as a “window of opportunity” to return to exercise and nutrition as preventative tools to keep the disease from worsening further. Detailed exercises with photographs can be done at home, at a gym, or under a trainer’s or physical therapist’s supervision. Nutritional strategies are presented in detail, along with suggestions for ways of keeping on track. Some of the advice is common sense; some is less obvious. Each topic discussed is accompanied by information about why it is important. In today’s increasing subspecialization of medicine, it becomes even more important for patients to know more about their ailments so that they can take an active role in discussing various treatment options with their doctors. This book enables them to do just that. The Arthritis Book provides readers with the information they need to advocate for themselves and to get the quality care they deserve. |
