All Martial

Karate, like all martial arts requires a good level of fitness. Of course, you can get fit by simply attending the classes themselves, but to really get the most from your training you must do more. If you are unfit all the kicking, punching etc., will push you beyond your limit which is not good preparation for the inevitable Karate gradings. These Karate gradings, particularly, necessitate a fitness level beyond that of the general public, the Tabata method can help you attain this and more!

Being able to comfortably handle the intensity of you class will allow you to get much more out of your training. No more huffing and puffing your way through a session, unable to pick up all the snippets of information given to you, simply because you are too fatigued to take it all in.

Your first thought may be to search the internet for a kickboxing workout DVD, a Karate exercise download or even a wii fit karate program! All of this is unnecessary, however, as Dr Tabata's method will enable you to build your own fitness program based on your favourite Karate exercises or techniques. It's a straightforward method that can be done in just four minutes! With added warm up and cool down you can complete the whole lot in ten minutes.

Here's how, Dr Tabata's method involves eight sets of 30 second intervals, each of which is broken into 20 seconds of effort with 10 seconds of rest, for a total of four minutes. Sounds easy, but the effort interval has to be flat out, no cruising, maximal exertion only. It still doesn't sound overly taxing, but you will be surprised at just how hard this four minute workout is.

So let's say you choose the following for the eight sets of the Tabata

1. Press ups
2. Shadow fighting
3. Sit ups
4. Mawashi geri's changing leg
5. Burpees
6. Any kick, punch combination
7. Squats
8. Tobi geri

Add some kata to warm up and cool down with, a bit of stretching and you have a mini workout, potentially in under ten minutes! That four minute Tabata section will improve both aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, by up to 14% and 28% respectively, so found the original study. That involved five sessions a week for six weeks! That works out at just 20 minutes a week, plus warm up/cool down! You will, of course, only get these benefits if you work out very intensely, the effort phase of each set must be maximum effort, this is absolutely critical.

You will have to be your own judge, you know if you are skimping, with the Tabata method you won't get the fitness benefits if you cheat yourself. If, however, you do these routines correctly your fitness will go through the roof! Go for it, smash out those Karate exercises in the Tabata protocol and your next Karate belt grading as well as regular lessons will be much easier physically.

Martial Virtues

Martial Virtues

$24.95

Martial Virtues explores the place of the martial arts in the development of moral character. It focuses on the spiritual aspects of martial arts training, attempting to answer the question of what it means to be a good warrior. In this groundbreaking analysis, Hackney draws from the psychological literature and from the lives and experiences of admirable warriors of fact and fiction. He analyzes how the virtues of ancient and modern warriors can be developed by practicing the martial arts. Using examples from the ancient Greeks to the samurai practitioners of Bushido, from Confucius all the way to Bruce Lee. Martial Virtues scrutinizes such qualities as courage, wisdom, justice and benevolence in turn, employing the lessons of modern psychology to understand how these virtues can be cultivated within ourselves and others.

A war where it didn't matter who won. All that mattered was to survive. But even survival could be dangerous in an army where the Fuhrer's fanatics were rife. To survive the Russian tanks, the machine guns, the flame-throwers could mean shipment to the infamous and brutal Torgau Prison where conditions were almost more savage than the Front. Survival could mean arrest, court martial and a cold grey day facing the execution squad.

Martial Arts and Philosophy

Martial Arts and Philosophy

$21.95

Socrates, an Athenian soldier, was a calmly efficient killing machine. His student Plato was an accomplished and broad-shouldered wrestler. Martial arts and philosophy have always gone hand in hand, as well as fist in throat. Philosophical argument is closely parallel with hand-to-hand combat. And all of today’s Asian martial arts—like Karate, Kung-Fu, Judo, or Aikido—were developed to embody and apply philosophical ideas. The Japanese martial tradition of Budo, for instance, was influenced by the three philosophical traditions of Shinto, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism, and these philosophies are still taught in Japanese martial arts schools all across the world. As Damon Young explains in his chapter, the Japanese martial arts customs of courtesy are derived from Shinto purity, Confucian virtues, and the loving brutality of Zen. In his interview with Bodidharma (included in the book), Graham Priest brings out aspects of Buddhist philosophy behind Shaolin Kung-Fu—how fighting monks are seeking Buddhahood, not brawls. But as Scott Farrell’s chapter reveals, Eastern martial arts have no monopoly on philosophical traditions. Western chivalry is an education in and living revival of Aristotelian ethical theories. The Western martial art of fencing is explored by Nick Michaud, who looks at the morality of selfishness in fencing, and Christopher Lawrence and Jeremy Moss, who try to pin down what makes fencing unique: is it the sword, the techniques, the footwork, the aristocratic aura, or something else? Jack Fuller argues that his training in Karate was an education in Stoicism. Travis Taylor and Sasha Cooper reveal the utilitarian thinking behind Jigoro Kano’s Judo. Kevin Krein maintains that the martial arts are a reply to the existentialist’s anxiety about the meaninglessness of life. Patricia Peterson examines Karate’s contribution to feminism, and Scott Beattie analyzes the role of space in the martial arts school. Joe Lynch pits the Western ideas of Plato against the Eastern ideas of the Shaolin monks. Bronwyn Finnigan and Koji Tanaka uncover the meaning of human action as it appears in Kendo. Rick Schubert explains the meaning of mastery in the fighting arts. Moving to ethical issues, Tamara Kohn discovers what we owe to others in Aikido. Chris Mortensen questions whether his own Buddhist pacifism is compatible with being a martial artist. In different ways, Gillian Russell and John Haffner and Jason Vogel assess the ways in which martial arts can morally compromise us. How can the sweaty and the brutal be exquisitely beautiful? Judy Saltzman looks into the curious charm of fighting and forms, with help from Friedrich Nietzsche.

Chinese Martial Code provides clear, easy to follow translations of three of the most respected works on strategy in history, featuring a masterful translation of The Art of War of Sun Tzu—the most respected of all works of military strategy—as well as the less famous but equally wise Precepts of Ssu Ma Jang Chu and Wu Chi On the Art of War. Additionally, A. L. Sadler's translation is converted here into Pinyin for the first time and the original Chinese language versions of these classic texts are also included, making this title a treasure to Chinese history and military scholars as well. The text is also copiously annotated, placing its sage advice in perspective for modern readers planning to use these time-tested strategies to conquer the business world.

This new edition has been fully revised to provide detailed coverage of the Act, which is due to come into force in October 2009. It includes a new chapter reviewing and assessing the impact of key cases in the European Court of Human Rights; new material highlighting the parallels and differences between procedure in the Crown Court and Court Martial; and a more in-depth treatment of sentencing matters.
