Paintball started off as a pretty simple game of tag with guns that fired paint. As the game became more and more popular new types of paintball games were added into the mix. This kept people interested and meant that the game/sport itself kept growing and growing. So let's have a look at the various types of games you can expect to wind up coming across on your average day of playing paintball.

Capture The Flag

This is a two team game. Each team has a flag at their base. The goal of the enemy team is to capture your flag and bring it back to their base - this is the main way a game of CTF is won. The other option is that you simply kill off the entire enemy team and casually walk away with their flag. CTF is a tough enough game to - you have to focus on defense and offensive play at the same time. Unless your team is organized properly from the get go then your CTF match can be over pretty quickly. Having dedicated offensive and defensive team members is the quickest way to victory.

Hostage Rescue

A member of the opposing team "kidnapped" by your team and placed in a hut. Your entire team is then on guard and defensive duties around the hut. The rules will stop your team from stepping outside a set boundary so you're often left exposed to enemy fire. The enemy can crawl up on you any way they want. To win a member of the enemy team has to breach the hut and rescue their team member. These games can start off pretty slowly but get very hectic very quickly.

Assault/King Of The Hill

You'll need some high ground to play this game properly - a slope or hill with a flat part at the top of it. One team takes up a defensive position at the top of the hill. The other team has to slog uphill and either capture the "fort" or capture a small flag that's left just outside the walls of the fort. At best you'll usually have a sandbag or two to hide behind and you run the constant risk of enemy snipers crawling up behind your position and picking you off.

Speedball

A speedball game usually uses a lot of inflatable bunkers or natural obstacles like fallen trees. In the center of the pitch/forest/field a marshall will put a flag (this game is sometimes called Center Flag) right between both teams. How do you win? You have to capture that single flag and get it back to your base. This means there's either a huge rush for the flag straight away and the game ends quickly or (usually) a few people rush the flag, get knocked out and then it turns into a game of sniping and sneaking from that point on. Still great fun though.

What's the best paintball game? They all have their merits and they're all great fun too but I gotta admit that I love a good game of Capture the Flag (played in a large pitch/arena) more than most other things in the world.
